(D)PM stands for diesel particulate matter. Particulate matter is a form of air pollution. It is a mixture of liquid and solid dust particulates with a very divergent composition and a dimension smaller than 10µm (micrometer). With diesel generating sets, the black smoke is the soluble organic fraction (SOF)* and the particulate matter that consists of diesel soot particulates (carbon particulates) and lubricant residue.

Particulates with a diameter of 10µm are called PM10 and particulates with a diameter smaller than 2.5µm are called PM2.5.

*Soluble organic fraction is the accumulation of organic particulates derived from engine oil and fuel.
