Always follow the steps mentioned in the user’s manuals and the maintenance schedules.
The generating set usually consists of two main parts: the alternator and the engine (sometimes the control panel as well).
Make sure no dust or dirt gets to the alternator, otherwise it may not cool enough and overheat. To prevent this, clean the alternator regularly by blowing compressed air on it. You should also check the bearings and the carbon brushes, if applicable, and clean them if necessary.
The engine needs more maintenance, depending on the type of the engine.
We can compare this to the maintenance of a car with the same type of engine.
Attention: we are using guide values. These values are not binding and depend on the type of oil.
Engine maintenance
1. Gasoline engine
- Clean engine and parts according to the maintenance schedule.
- Change the engine oil (and oil filter if applicable) after 100 running hours. We recommend to change the oil every year if the engine has not been used on a regular basis.
- Replace the gasoline filter.
- Check your valves (valve clearance) and adjust if necessary.
- Replace the air filter after 200 running hours.
- Replace the spark plugs on a yearly basis.
- When replacing the spark plugs, we recommend you to have the carburetor cleaned as well by an authorized dealer. To do so, open it up, blow out the jets and the channels, and clean it with gasoline.
2. Diesel engine
The recommended time for cleaning/replacing/changing parts depends on the size of the engine (air-cooled or water-cooled engines)
- Change the engine oil after 150/75 running hours. We recommend to change the oil every year if the engine has not been used much.
- Check your valves (valve clearance) and adjust if necessary.
- Replace the oil filter after 200/250 running hours. We recommend to replace the oil filter every year if the engine has not been used much.
- Replace the air filter after 100/500 running hours. We recommend to replace the air filter every year if the engine has not been used much.
- Replace the fuel filter after 250/400 running hours. We recommend to replace the fuel filter every year if the engine has not been used much.
- Splash-proof generating sets have a fuel/water separator that has to be checked before each use.
- Check the coolant level before each use.
Air-cooled 3000rpm | Water-cooled 3000rpm | Water-cooled 1500rpm | |
---|---|---|---|
Change engine oil | 75-100 | 75-200 | 125-500 |
Replace oil filter | 200 | 200 | 125-500 |
Replace air filter | 500 | 1000 | 2000 |
Replace fuel filter | 250 | 400 | 400 |
Check fuel/water separator | 8-15 | 50-100 | 50-100 |
Check oil level | Before each use | Before each use | Before each use |
* The values used in this chart are expressed in running hours.
3. Gas engine
- Change engine oil after 100 running hours. We recommend to change the oil every year if the engine has not been used much.
- Check your valves (valve clearance) and adjust if necessary.
- Replace air filter after 200 running hours.
- Replace spark plugs on a yearly basis.
- Check for leaks.
