DPF stands for diesel particulate filter. The DPF is a particulate filter or catalyst that reduces a diesel engine’s emission of particulate matter by 90%. This filter has a porous skin that stops soot particles. This way, exhaust gases of smaller dirt particles that are brought about by an incomplete combustion, are purified.

Unpurified dirt particles, also known as particulate matter (PM), are harmful to the human being and the environment. They can also create smog.

A DPF is used in combination with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR).
